Banking in Seville for expats made easy

Opening a bank account in Seville as a foreigner is more involved than it sounds and choosing the wrong bank early on causes real frustration. Whether you’re a new resident or a non-resident needing access to Spanish banking, this page covers the best banks for expats in Seville, including traditional Spanish options and digital alternatives like Wise.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BANKING IN SPAIN

Most Spanish banks require a NIE to open an account as a resident. Some will open a non-resident account with just a passport, but with more restrictions.

You’ll typically need your NIE, passport, proof of address (padron certificate), and proof of income to open a full resident account.

Wise and Revolut are not Spanish bank accounts but work extremely well for autonomo workers working for companies not registered in Spain.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Banking questions answered

The things people ask us most often about banking and managing money as a foreign resident in Seville.

Can I open a Spanish bank account without a NIE?

Some Spanish banks will open a non-resident account with just a passport and proof of address, but these accounts come with more restrictions such as limited online banking, no direct debits in some cases, and usually higher fees. For a full resident account with all features, you need your NIE. If you haven’t got your NIE yet, open a Wise account as a bridge. It’s fully functional immediately and handles international transfers far better than any Spanish bank account will.
Banco Sabadell has the most developed expat offering of any traditional Spanish bank and they have an expat-specific service with English-speaking staff in many branches. ING España is excellent for fee-free banking with simple English online support. Openbank (Santander’s digital arm) is worth considering for those who want a no-branch digital Spanish bank account. Avoid the larger traditional banks like CaixaBank and BBVA for expat services specifically. They’re decent banks but not set up for non-Spanish speakers.
Wise is excellent but works best alongside a Spanish bank account rather than instead of one. You’ll need a Spanish account for things like setting up direct debits for utilities, paying Spanish rent via bank transfer, and receiving your Spanish salary if employed. Where Wise is genuinely better than Spanish banks is for receiving income from abroad, international transfers, and day-to-day spending. It uses the real exchange rate rather than the inflated rates banks typically charge. Most expats in Spain use both.
Not always but it depends on the visa type. For the non-lucrative visa and digital nomad visa, you typically need to show sufficient funds, but these can be in a foreign account. However, once you’re resident and paying taxes, utilities, and rent in Spain, a Spanish account becomes practically essential. It’s also required for many administrative processes; paying traffic fines, certain government fees, and setting up Spanish direct debits all require a Spanish IBAN. Get one sorted early rather than waiting until you specifically need it.
For a full resident account you’ll typically need your NIE or TIE, your passport, a padron certificate (proof of registration at your address in Seville), and proof of income such as payslips, a contract of employment, or bank statements showing regular income if self-employed. Requirements vary slightly by bank, and some ask for additional documents for self-employed applicants. Going to the branch with more documentation than you think you need is always better than being turned away and having to come back.
