WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SERVICES IN SEVILLE

Good tradespeople in Seville are often very busy so get recommendations rather than picking from a Google search, and build a relationship with ones you trust before you urgently need them.
Home contents insurance in Spain is separate from building insurance. If you’re renting, your landlord covers the building but you’ll need your own contents policy.
Setting up utilities (electricity, water, internet) requires a NIE and Spanish bank account. Your gestoría or landlord can often help coordinate this when you first move in.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Home & lifestyle answered

The practical questions expats ask us most often about day-to-day life in Seville.

How do I find a reliable plumber or electrician in Seville?

Recommendations from people you trust are by far the most reliable route, which is exactly why this category exists. Random Google searches in Spain can produce very mixed results, and without Spanish to read reviews properly, it’s hard to filter. The verified listings on this page have been assessed personally. For trades not listed here, the Get Help page is the quickest route and if we know someone good for your specific need, we’ll say so. Expat Facebook groups for Seville are also a reasonable source of recommendations, though quality varies considerably.
Once you’re a resident in Spain, you are legally required to have Spanish car insurance and UK policies do not provide valid cover for vehicles that are permanently based in Spain. The timeline for switching depends on your residency status and vehicle registration situation, but as a general rule, once you’re a registered resident you should have Spanish insurance in place. Spanish car insurance is typically cheaper than UK equivalents. If you’re in the process of re-registering a UK vehicle on Spanish plates, your insurance broker can advise on cover during the transition period.
For renters, contents insurance is the priority as your landlord’s building insurance won’t cover your belongings. Policies from Mapfre, Allianz, and AXA are commonly used by expats and are available in English. Costs vary but a reasonable contents policy typically runs €150–300 per year depending on cover level and the value of your belongings. If you own your property, you’ll need a combined building and contents policy — your mortgage lender will usually require this. An insurance broker who works with expats can find the right policy and explain the terms in English, which is genuinely valuable when it comes to understanding what you’re actually covered for.
For electricity and water, the process depends on whether accounts are already in place at the property. If utilities are already connected, you’ll typically need to transfer them to your name, which requires your NIE, Spanish bank account IBAN, and the existing contract reference number. Your landlord should provide this. If utilities need to be set up from scratch, it’s a longer process involving a supply application. For internet, Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange are the main providers and all offer fibre broadband across most of Seville. Getting a good English-speaking contact at your gestoría to handle utility transfers can save significant frustration.
Yes, it can be. Spanish tradespeople are often excellent at their work but English is not commonly spoken in the trades, and the combination of a language barrier and an unfamiliar client can sometimes lead to misunderstandings about scope, price, or timing. The best approach is to find tradespeople through personal recommendations from other expats, use WhatsApp voice notes or written messages rather than phone calls when language is a barrier, and always confirm costs in writing before work begins. Building a relationship with a small number of trusted tradespeople early makes life considerably easier and they become your first call rather than a stressful search every time something breaks.
